Still in Kottke Land

- Get hooked on a band
- Obsessively and exclusively listen to everything by that band for the next year
- Get sick of band
Get hooked on another band..etc…So I’ve still got another 8 or so months of Kottke in front of me. Part of the obsession this time around is trying to play some of his stuff. Here’s a go at Last Steam Engine Train. Please, please do not listen to his version as it makes this sound like like a nickel arcade hurdy gurdy. I tried to upload it to the Box.et place, hopefully it works.

I actually discovered something interesting while practicing this. Before picking up guitar, I played banjo for a while which is where I learned how to pick. Banjo picking uses 3 fingers. Listening to other versions of this song, I couldn’t figure out how they were getting some much sound out of their picking. After some research, I realized guitar picking is done with 4 fingers, including the ring finger. The version I recorded uses 3 fingers, I’m trying to practice the same song using 4and it’s like if you grew another leg and had to relearn how to walk, very akward. If I get it to a listenable state, I’ll post it.

Ah yeah. Outstanding.
Any chance you could post (in the comments or otherwise) the changes to this tune? I suppose I could look them up someplace.
One reason I ask is that I just imported your song into GarageBand. Heh heh heh. Could get weird!

By the way, I also copied the file into the Box.net widget. Downloading from that thing, which I’ve never done before, was very easy. Wonders never cease.
just grabbed this out of The Box and gave it a listen – NICE WORK! I’ve been listening to the Kottke version for many years (ulp- decades?) and this is really as good an interp as I’ve heard. That is just so nice and clean. Thanks for posting!
Thank you kind sirs! Gillies, I tried to post it to the box widget and it said I wasn’t the owner and got mad. I could have done something wrong. I was able to post it through the box.net website, but not the widget.
Darn widget! That’s cool. It’s easy for me to copy stuff to and fro.
Dude, I just put up on the Pandora, and it served up an utterly crackling “You Enjoy Myself” from New Year’s Eve 1995.
