Vamos United

From the Capital Business Blog:

D.C. City Administrator Allen Y. Lew, who oversaw construction of Nationals Park and the convention center, said in a brief interview last week that after repeated meetings with D.C. United’s new ownership and other stakeholders he hopes to have the framework for a deal to build a new stadium for the team “inside of a year.”

The Worst Part of Pro Hockey

Washington Post:

The one bright spot in the first 40 minutes was [Matt] Hendricks, who not only scored his team’s only goal until the game was out of hand but started a fight with the Jets’ Jim Slater as the buzzer sounded to end the second period, apparently figuring he had to do something to give his team some life. “I figured, why not?” Hendricks said. “I was hoping to get the crowd going, the bench going, get some energy in the building.” He smiled wanly. “That’s why it [fighting] is part of hockey.”

If there’s anything that will cause me to quit watching pro hockey, it’s stuff like this. Fighting ought to be banned.

Some Get Rained Out

I’ve been making my way through Ken Burns’ “Baseball” on Netflix. Prior to watching, I had never heard of Satchel Paige, who, in addition to being a pitching great, also had a way with words. Here’s a quote:

“You win a few, you lose a few. Some get rained out. But you got to dress for all of them.”

This One Goes Out to the Security Guard at RFK

So I attended my first DC United game last night. It was an interesting experience. Couple of observations.

  •  The team needs a new stadium. Yes, RFK has a sort of a cool, old school aura. But the place definitely feels low budget, like it’s on its way out. The huge, empty upper decks are unsettling.
  • As we approached the entrance, a security guard motioned to me and said, “No backpacks!” Put it in your car, he told me. I had no car, so the guard took pity on me and let me take in the bag (which had rain gear and other essentials). Thanks, man.
  • Like most sports, I guess, soccer is more exciting live than on television. The game was a 1-1 tie, but it was fun the whole time.
  • There were a couple of bum calls in the game, and the fans got as pissed off at the refs as I’ve ever seen. Very loud booing. The refs were escorted off the field by security and even MPD. Maybe it’s a soccer thing.
