Catasto Elettrico

What an amazing idea.  This is a band that only exists on line.  There are records, but they’re not for sale.  No concerts, no labels, no songs.  Just three crazy Italians with a serious jones for music.  I LOVE this idea.  They jam together, come up with a few things that might be worthwhile and then – *presto* – the next album is released.  I’m only just listening to this stuff for the first time now, but it seems pretty cool.  They seem to have a bit of a following, and they recommend other bands who are doing the same thing.  Makes ya think…

Jamming with a Three-Year Old

The other day, my son, age three, sat down at the Yamaha while I was playing around with the Starcaster. He turned on the keyboard, pressed a few buttons, and got this disco beat going. I don’t know how he did this – I’m sure he doesn’t know either.

Then, crazily, he also somehow switched from the default grand piano sound to an electric piano sound. I’m not kidding. He started banging on the keyboard in the lower octaves.

So we had the disco beat going, and my son was wapping out some low notes with an electric piano sound. Taking advantage of the disco moment, I got into it on the Starcaster.

Now, this didn’t last long, but I swear to you, I had that feeling of a good jam. Any musician knows what I’m talking about. It’s the thrill of spontaneously creating music with other people. Whether or not that music is good does not matter – you are playing and feeling it.

I’ve gotten together a couple of times to jam with mpomy and a drummer friend of ours here in DC. Back in 2005, we did a session, down in our friend’s basement. In our warm-up jam, completely improvised, I got that feeling. It’s at 2:50 in this track. I think that was the high point of the day for me. Mpomy is on the bass on this track, by the way.

I wonder if my son felt it last weekend?
