Still in Kottke Land
Posted: July 29, 2009 Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: kottke, music 6 Comments »For better or for worse, this is typically my music experience.
- Get hooked on a band
- Obsessively and exclusively listen to everything by that band for the next year
- Get sick of band
Get hooked on another band..etc…So I’ve still got another 8 or so months of Kottke in front of me. Part of the obsession this time around is trying to play some of his stuff. Here’s a go at Last Steam Engine Train. Please, please do not listen to his version as it makes this sound like like a nickel arcade hurdy gurdy. I tried to upload it to the Box.et place, hopefully it works.

I actually discovered something interesting while practicing this. Before picking up guitar, I played banjo for a while which is where I learned how to pick. Banjo picking uses 3 fingers. Listening to other versions of this song, I couldn’t figure out how they were getting some much sound out of their picking. After some research, I realized guitar picking is done with 4 fingers, including the ring finger. The version I recorded uses 3 fingers, I’m trying to practice the same song using 4and it’s like if you grew another leg and had to relearn how to walk, very akward. If I get it to a listenable state, I’ll post it.

No GarageBand, no Logic, although it interfaces nicely with both. The thing has a ‘tapedeck’ function which, I think, is intended for looping, but I’m just using it to make very quick recordings and jot down notes.
