Dispatches from mpomy world

020508yauch

Adam Yauch (MCA) of The Beastie Boys has cancer.  The video announcement is mainly an apology to fans because some of the shows will be postponed due to his treatment.  He was not at all specific about about what treatment would consist of or what the exact diagnosis is, but he was positive, said it had something to do with a lymph node or gland in the neck and that it was very treatable.  the album release (scheduled for September 15 ) will also be pushed back.

This absolutely sucks.  I FUCKING HATE CANCER.  That being said, I wish him, his boyz, and his family the best of luck and hope it can all be addressed with a minimal of heinosity.  What a kick in the head.

Next item is my sad guitars – they need new strings.  So, now that I’ve dealt with my B.S. for the day, I’m going to sneak out a little early and get down with some new strings.  Invariably, this will lead to some new rffiing, hopefully with my new friend Reason 4.0.

I continue to feel that my destiny is to learn how to play an Akai MPC device.  Hopefully this means a resonably priced controller that integrates easily with Reason, which is a lot more powerful than any Akai stand-alone.  I’m not thrilled with the functionality of the Axiom 25 and Reason, but it will do for now.  the biggest problem is my own ignorance.

The Phillies rule!  That’s not music related, but watcha gonna do?

I’ve got a ton of new music to listen, especially some new Dutch prog and old Japanese prog.  more on that later.  This is an absolutely great site for scooping up crazy and eclectic titles.  There are a LOT of contributors and it’s very international.  Most of these title would simply not be available through any pother means.

The Edge (of U2 fame) is on Twitter and doing a nice job of giving you all a chance to see what this massive tour looks like from behind the scenes.  All his tweets are photos and there is some very cool stuff from before and after shows.  the guy has a pretty artistic eye.  Pretty good guitar player too.

Mike Gordon Tour, Warren Haynes

PHISH – BONNAROO 2009 – MIKE GORDON

Two things crossed my transom this afternoon.

First, Mike Gordon is hitting the road this fall. He’s playing in the greater DC area on September 12, a show I will strongly consider attending.

From Phish.com:

After two highly acclaimed runs last year touring on the release of his album The Green Sparrow, Mike returns with the same five-piece lineup, including longtime collaborator Scott Murawski on guitar, Vermonters Craig Myers on percussion and Tom Cleary on keyboards and Brooklyn drummer Todd Isler.

Scott Murawski, for anyone wondering, is of Max Creek fame. I’ve seen that band twice. The first time was at my high school, where I only remember them putting on a killer show and a student administrator complaining about their backstage demands (I think their contract stipulated a bunch of random things, like spaghetti and meatballs). The second gig was at some club in Providence, RI – I’m pretty sure it was the Living Room – freshman year. That was a good show too, although I remember not much about it. They played “Just a Rose.” You can find that number here.

Next, Warren Haynes is keeping very busy, according to Billboard.com. And check this shit out:

Haynes is also enthused about the eventual release of a solo album he recorded that he says “hearkens back to my earliest influences…soul music but it also kind of sounds like when Freddie King and B.B. King and Albert King did their more crossover records, where they were mixing funk and soul with blues.” Haynes recorded the album with Meters bassist George Porter, Jr., Ivan Neville and Ian McLagan on keyboardist and Ron Holloway on saxophone. Neville and Ruthie Foster sing, along with Haynes.

Holy guacamole. Sign me up for that one.

Beastie Boys – Hot Sauce Committee Pt.1 out 9/15/09

Should be pretty good.  Whenever they get around to ‘Pt. 2′, Mr. Bob Dylan will be a guest.  until then we’ll have to be content with the durable trio from Brooklyn, along with guests Nas and Santigold.

Joy

That’s the name of the new Phish record.
On Phish.com:

Phish will be releasing Joy, their first studio album in five years, later this summer on JEMP Records. The record was recorded in New York City this spring with producer Steve Lillywhite.
I’ve heard two songs from the new one. The first is Time Turns elastic, blogged by the greater Fretbuzz community here and here. The second is “Backwards Down the Number Line,” a straightforward, happy rock song that Phish first played at their triumphant return to the stage in Hampton, VA earlier this year.
I eagerly await this release. Always nice to have something to look forward to.

Catasto Elettrico

What an amazing idea.  This is a band that only exists on line.  There are records, but they’re not for sale.  No concerts, no labels, no songs.  Just three crazy Italians with a serious jones for music.  I LOVE this idea.  They jam together, come up with a few things that might be worthwhile and then – *presto* – the next album is released.  I’m only just listening to this stuff for the first time now, but it seems pretty cool.  They seem to have a bit of a following, and they recommend other bands who are doing the same thing.  Makes ya think…

New Squarepusher release – Solo Electric Bass

I have to wait until August 17?? Are you kidding me?!? Ugh.

Guess what just arrived in the mail…

Finally, Trilok is here! No chance to give it a good listen here at the office, but I’ll be looking forward to sharing my thoughts just as soon as they are sufficiently formed. That’s right, folks – I actually purchased this record.
