Matter is Composed Chiefly of Nothing

  • Sagan:

Atoms are mainly empty space. Matter is composed chiefly of nothing.

The Curtain (via YEMBlog)

Free time ran in rather short supply today. Here, via YEMBlog, is Phish playing “The Curtain” back in 1992. The video quality is fair to poor, but the energy on stage comes through very nicely.

No Objections to “No Reply” Down the Road

Last night, I watched all of Phish doing “No Reply at All” at the March 15 Hall of Fame festivities. Having now seen both both of the Genesis covers, I agree with what appears to be the consensus – Phish nailed “Watcher,” but “No Reply” was, as they used to say at a camp where I once worked, “fair to poor.”

That’s not to say I wouldn’t be quite pleased if the band busted out “No Reply” out at Merriweather on June 26.

Anyway, with a hat tip to YEMblog, here’s a good quality video of “Watcher of the Skies” for the record.

Pretty Sure I Just Got #Phish Tickets

I’m not too experienced in the ways of Phish’s lottery system, but I put in for a couple of summer tour tickets, and my credit card just got charged. Looks like I’m going to Merriweather on June 26th.

Always Nice to Have Something to Look Forward to

Phish 3D, filmed at Festival 8 – the band’s three-day festival which took place on October 30th, 31st and November 1st at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California – will be in theatres nationwide in 3D on April 30th. The band performed 8 sets over the course of the weekend, including a special Acoustic Set on Sunday afternoon. Keeping the tradition of past Halloween shows, they donned a musical costume on Halloween night, covering The Rolling Stones’ album Exile On Main Street.

Phish Covers “Watcher of the Skies”

Three bits of awesome I’ll note for the record tonight.

First, as I crossed a bridge over Rock Creek this evening, a big hawk or something floated not far overhead. I got a good look at him. A bona fide bird of prey.

Second, Phish paid serious homage to Genesis this evening at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, covering ‘Watcher of the Skies‘ and ‘No Reply at All.’ I don’t have cable, but I did follow along via #phish and #genesis hashtags on Twitter. As you might imagine, the stream was a mixed bag: “This sucks!” type tweets, followed by “Phish is so tight!” etc. I hope someone posts video soon.

Finally, disc 3 of “Cosmos” arrived in the mail. More deep thoughts ahead.

Jamming = Conversation

Page McConnell, in this month’s Keyboard magazine:

“The jamming that we do and the communication that happens when we’re really improvising well together is about the listening and the chemistry of the four of our personalities. It’s not that different to me when we’re having a conversation than when we’re onstage playing; it’s a very similar kind of energy and free-form-ness.”

Amazing Shows for Open Minds

PhishTwit, earlier today:

Have an open mind and want to see an amazing show? Iron Maiden Final Frontier Tour was just announced http://j.mp/bPVm9A

I wonder what kind of overlap there is between Phish fans and Iron Maiden fans?
