RPG Productions recorded this one – called “Did he?” – in July or August of ’03. Good times.

You Have to be Good
Forbes’ Brian Wingfield has a nice story up about how “the digital revolution has made it easier than ever to create, market and sell music.”
Record companies are also using digital tools to help them find new acts. For example, using Tunecore’s technology, three Universal Music Group labels earlier this month launched Web sites where musicians can upload their songs for consideration by talent scouts: www.unimodigitaldistribution.com, www.republicdd.com, www.idjfirstlook.com and www.interscopedigitaldistribution.com.
Sweet – maybe I should send in some of my stuff, like RPG Productions’ seminal “Jam in A” from March 2004:
Ah, but Wingfield’s story continues with a “caveat to all this digital wizardry.”
“The first criterion is you have to be good, which almost no acts are,” says Bob Lefsetz, an industry analyst who runs the Lefsetz Letter, a popular and candid industry blog.

The Evolution of “Sunoco”
My post last night prompted me to think of an FBdN original where I paid a little homage to “Keep it Dark.” The song is called “Sunoco,” and its title refers to the name of a greyhound that we fostered. Pretty good guy, as I recall. He got adopted by some folks in Takoma Park, Maryland who renamed him Maui.
Anyway, I wouldn’t call the composition brilliant or anything, but it’s one original tune I’ve got a couple of versions of. Here’s what the song first sounded like when I recorded it in GarageBand in September 2004.
Then RPG Productions took a crack at it, down in the basement of Casa de Sturjean, in early 2005.
Then I subsequently tricked the RPG recording out with some extra tracks, including some psychedelic whistling and an odd voice-over bit.

Free Time

Uploaded to Flickr by bobeightpop
This weekend marks two occasions.
First, I’m getting a bit sprung loose tomorrow. Spouse and sons of FBdN are taking off for the great state of Maine for two weeks. So, I’ll have a bit more time on my hands than usual. We’ll see what effect this has on my blogging. Perhaps the blogging will pick up, as a function of having more free time, or maybe free time isn’t really a factor. Maybe blog output is sort of a constant. You only have so many posts in you per day, in other words. We’ll see.
Second, as indicated here, greater Washington, DC will welcome MPomy to town. It looks like the weather will be accommodating, if on the warmer side – good news for attendees of ProgNation in Columbia, MD tomorrow. I’m very much looking forward to hanging with MPomy and el Sturjean, the latter being the “R” in RPG Productions. Speaking of, here’s an RPG track from 2004, recorded in R’s basement. We sort of f’d up a key part of the song, but I think the tune holds up pretty well overall.

RPG Productions: Russell, Meet the Edge (2003)
Another one:
I think I’m starting to see the value proposition for SoundCloud.
